I Got a New Watch | Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT (SSK023)

I’ve started getting into watches. What I mean by that is, I’ve been getting watch ads for a while, but only recently did I decide to actually try and get a nice one. Now, I knew I wasn’t getting a crazy expensive one as wade right outside luxury watch territory. I did, however, know what I was more-or-less looking for. I saw an ad for a watch (that was $9,000) that had a more matte/brushed metal finish instead of the shiny classic one and decided I’d try and look for something similar. I watched a few videos I’d seen in the past of some watches to inspire me for what brands to look for. Seiko seemed like a good choice because they were nice but weren’t going to break my bank. I searched Instagram for the Seiko SARB033 because it caught my eye. The first video I actually watched was this one even though it wasn’t even about the SARB033; it was about the SSK023. I was just drawn to the thumbnail because it looked different and also had the brushed metal finish I wanted. I loved the watch face and the style of the links too. I found the best deal on it here. I bought it almost without thinking. The Belk 20 minutes from me serendipitously had 1 and only 1 in stock, so I chose in-store pickup. The stars were aligning. To add context, this all happened at 6 am on a Saturday before I went to go play pickleball.

Fast forward to the unboxing, and the watch was beautiful. The finish of the metal was exactly what I wanted. Then idiot me tried it on, and it was gigantic. I forgot that links need to be adjusted on watches like this, so I immediately started looking for kits near me because I couldn’t wait for Amazon. Why did I buy a watch only to not wear it right away, right? Then I had the bright idea to search if anywhere near me would adjust watches and found a local jeweler that did. I called them, and I left 5 minutes after I hung up. I was devastated to learn that I’d have to wait until Wednesday to get the watch back because it’s a next-day service, and they are only open from Wednesday to Saturday. I chose to do it anyway because as my first fancy watch, I didn’t want to botch the link adjustment process.

I’m embarrassed about how annoying I was when I went to try it on the following Wednesday lmao. It fit okay, but I was unsure. It felt a little too loose. I requested they take the clasp in one notch, and I left. In my car, I was rotating my wrist and scrutinizing the fit. I went back inside, told them they were right the first time, and got it back in its original state.

I absolutely love this watch. It compliments my style really well. I want to wear it all the time. I think it’s a subtle statement piece now, and it just makes me happy to look at. Now I can’t wait to keep spending money on watches 🙃.
